Ya you heard right, there’s breed of coin designers. These coin designers have been coming out of the wood work for the last few years and today they are showing their skills as the produce some of the most outrageous coins on the market. Commonly their coins go for a higher price. Why you ask because they are released in limited quantities and their work is some of the most ground breaking ideas we have seen yet. Some have seen their coins go up in the neighborhood of $250 a piece at auction and in the lower ends of $30.
A few designers known are:
Todd Bass
Jana Wilson
Adam Mulholland
Bruce Neighbor
David Koch
Each have made coins that are truly unique and deserve praise. We know we will see some of these designers in the Challenge Coin Awards in 2008 and beyond or may be asked to judge entries as a panel judge. Designing a coin does not mean just asking someone to make the coin. It means you conceive of ideas to bring that coin to life and bring some new effects, shapes, styles, or a combination of all to the table. As hobbyist we need to embrace designers becuase these are the people that keep the hobby going.
Some people say these coins go for higher prices because new collector’s are uneducated. We disagree entirely to say “We believe these coins go for higher prices because they warrant them”. When you see a new coin come into the field of challenge coins you have to look at the coin then look at how many are there worldwide. most these developers will tell you how many were minted. If you see something like 100 worldwide, you had better start planning on grabbing one. Let’s put numbers together:
6.4 Billion People in the World (and growing)
Millions of Veterans
About 50,000 Collector’s Around the World
About 5,000 Active Collectors
and….100 Coins Available
Numbers alone will show you that the likelyhood of 100 coins being worth a lot of money from well known designers are really probable. Anyone that will argue this point should reflect on difference from 10 years ago when the common coin was massed produced to now. Things have changed and we love it!
