Odd shaped coins have become a craze in the last few years as people look to broaden their collections. This post highlights one of the most intriguing designs to date in the form of the SR-71 Blackbird. It’s a great coin that reflects the history of the fastest reconisence aircraft ever built in the era of the Cold War. The coin itself takes on one of the most underused platings available, the black nickel. The coin itself measures up at 2.5″ x 1.25″ in size. So it’s no small coin by those measurements. The coin has some highlighting with high polished silver. The details even include the older Air Force emblems on the wings.
This is one coin that will easily raise the bar for odd shaped coins and what can be done in the minting area to enhance design and actual production. Keeping the standard round coins are always going to be a staple in the hobby but many collector’s are going to be looking outside the box for this one. The coin was created and made by U.S. Challenge Coins. They have been innovators in the hobby for a long time and this is just another great example of why they are in the top of any challenge coin entity in today’s field.
The first launch for this coin was not eBay, not U.S. Challenge Coins, but rather Challenge Coin Auctions. This is being first available in the independent auction site to try to engage the collecting community in an alternative way to get better coins at better prices. We certainly support this venue and know you will too. Check out the SR-71 Challenge Coin on the auction block before it’s gone!
